University of Sri Jayewardenepura

The University of Sri Jayewardenepura is one of the leading universities of Sri Lanka. It is located in Gangodawila, Nugegoda, near the new capital of Sri Lanka, Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte.

The University of Sri Jayewardenepura dates back more than a century to 1873, when the Ven. Hikkaduwe Sri Sumangala NayakaThero laid the foundation stone for this distinguished centre of learning as a pirivena (Institute of Buddhist and Oriental Studies) named Vidyodaya (meaning "awakening of knowledge").

In 1958, it was reconstituted as the Vidyodaya University of Ceylon by an Act of Parliament. Under the Universities Act of 1978, it was re-named "University of Sri Jayewardenepura" in the new administrative capital of Sri Lanka. Today, its full-time student population is over 4,500 enrolled in the faculties of Arts, Management Studies and Commerce, Applied Sciences, Medical Sciences, and Graduate Studies

The Mission of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, founded upon the tenet Vijja Uppattam Setta (among all that arise knowledge is the greatest), is to excel as an institution of higher learning.

The University is committed to pursuing the transmission of knowledge through teaching, scholarship and research, and active service to the community in an environment which values creativity, freedom of intellectual thought and expression, equal opportunity, fairness and professional growth. The University's endeavour is to contribute to national development by providing a balanced education which blends the finest in theory and practice and by forging interactions between the University and the wider community.
