The University of Shanghai for Science and Technology (USST) is a full-fledged multidisciplinary university committed to training of professionally competent personnel in the fields of engineering (its main feature), management, commerce, arts, science and medicine. In May 1996, authorized by the State Education Commission, USST stemmed from the amalgamation of the former East China University of Technology and Shanghai Institute of Mechanical Technology. In September 1998, according to the principle of “co-established by both central government and local government, mainly managed by Shanghai Municipality”, along with its jurisdiction transferred from the former Ministry of Machinery Industry to Shanghai Municipality, USST has become a new-style municipal higher learning institute. In July 2003, due to the readjustment of universities in Shanghai, Shanghai Medical Apparatus & Instruments College and Shanghai Publishing & Printing Training School were put under the administration of USST, and established respectively as its College of Medical Apparatus & Instruments, and Publishing & Printing College.

USST, the amalgamation of East China University of Technology and Shanghai Institute of Mechanical Technology, has an enduring history, the former originated from Shanghai Industry School set up on the original campus of University of Shanghai aka Hujiang University(1906- 1952) after liberation, and the latter originated from Deutche Medizinschule set up in 1907.
