The University of Lagos (also known as Unilag) is one of Nigeria's premier universities. It is one of twenty-five federal universities, which are overseen and accredited by the National Universities Commission.

The University is situated in the heart of Lagos, the commercial capital of Nigeria, and has so far graduated more than 77,000 students since 1962 when it was founded with only 130 students and 30 staff members. Currently, the university has student population of more than 35,000 and a staff about 4,300 faculty and staff.

The University has residential and sports facilities for Staff and Students on Campus, as well as a Botanical and Zoological Garden.

Students of the University are referred to as 'Great Akokites' owing to the location of the University's main campus being in Akoka, Lagos. The Main Student halls of Residence are for Females - Moremi, Madam Tinubu Hall-MTH, Amina, all named after historical Nigerian figures and Male - Jaja, Fagunwa, Mariere, Eni Njoku, Shodeinde, Makama Bida, Henry Carr, El-Kanemi and Newest Hall II. The University of Lagos once had outreach programs in foreign countries including South Korea and South America.

There is a long standing rivalry between the Universities of Lagos, Ife and Ibadan due to their proximity and position in Academic history (they were among the early universities established in Nigeria, but the University of Nigeria, Nsukka was the first University formally established in Nigeria in 1960). Amongst its professors is Professor VOS Olunloyo, a National Merit Award Winner and a professor of Engineering. The University of Lagos has one of the most reliable academic calendar of all Nigerian Public Universities.[citation needed] The current Vice Chancellor is Professor Ibidapo Obe, a professor of Civil Engineering, and the Pro Chancellor is Chief Afe Babalola (SAN) one of the top lawyers and in fact the President's personal counsel and proponent of university autonomy.
