Jaffna University has two campuses. They are situated in Thirunelveli and Kilinochchi. The Arts, Science and Medical Faculties are sited in Thirunelveli near Jaffna. The Agriculture and Engineering Faculties are situated at Kilinochchi.

The nucleus of Jaffna University were two colleges (Parameshwara College and Ramanathan College) Constructed by a philanthropist and statesman named Sir P. Ramanathan. The Sirimao Government took these two colleges and started the initial Faculty of Arts and Faculty of Science.

[edit] Faculty of Medicine

Dr Kandiah Balasubramaniam was the Dean for a decade. As a head of biochemistry he lead the country in biotechnology and ground breaking researches. with his PhD experience from Indiana University, Bloomington he led the country in several researches.


[edit] Faculty of Agriculture

Dr. Sivamathy is the current dean of Faculty of Agriculture. Past deans include Mr S. Rajadurai, Mr. Vijayaratnum, Mr. Navaratnaraja, Prof. Mohanadas, and Prof. Kandiah. It is a golden period for the student when Prof. Kandiah was the dean of Agriculture. He died on his way from Jaffna to Kilinochchy.

[edit] Notable people affiliated with the UoJ

The late Hon. Justice Manicavasagar, Former Chancellor of The University of Jaffna. A very prominent man in society, he was also Chairmen of the commercial bank of ceylon, and received the Sri Lankan National Award by President Junius Richard Jayewardene.
