University Square Theatres
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
University Square Theatres is an independent cinema in Madison, Wisconsin. The theatre is located in the historic University Square Complex, occupying a space nestled in the city's vibrant downtown. Since taking up residence in a former Carmike Cinema, University Square Theatres has evolved into a community landmark and tourist boon, due largely to a willingness to defy industry norms. Tom Misco, owner and sometimes operator, also owns the Rivoli Theatre in LaCrosse, Wisconsin and remains one of the few active advocates for independent cinema in Wisconsin. His colorful personality has endowed University Square with a variety of diverse attractions, including full dinner menu, bar, and unique teal-based aesthetic. The Theatre Cafe, an adjunctive theatre added during the summer of 2004, has stretched the bounds of what people expect from a theatre experience. While initially specializing in second-run features, the theatre proved successful enough to justify first-run status. The University Square complex is scheduled for demolition May 15th. The city is justifiably concerned about mass protests and rioting on the date of demolition, but Misco has issued a plea for peace which he unequivocally states loyal 'Misconians' will follow. He also promises happy endings to all.
