[edit] History
In 1916, the University Laboratory School was founded as the Demonstration High School at the former LSU campus in downtown Baton Rouge. The purpose of the high school was to provide teachers and pre-service teaching candidates with an opportunity to study and observe effective teaching methods and to obtain practical classroom experience. In 1953, the Lab School was relocated to its current location as a stand alone building on Dalrymple Drive. Although the school opened with only 100 students in the grades 8-11, by 1936 it educated grades 1-11, by 1945 1-12, and by 1981 K-12. The gymnasium and auditorium at the Lab School were constructed in in 1964. After the destruction of the elementary school building in the fall of 1979, a new K-5 building was added in 1981, followed by the subsequent construction of new wings for the elementary and middle schools in 2004 and 2006. The original high 1053 school building underwent a massive renovation in 2005, allowing for the expansion of the high school classes to total around 400 students. As the first International Baccalaureate school in the state of Louisiana, the University Laboratory School is currently expanding from solely offering the high school curriculum to providing the Primary Years Program and Middle Years Program as well. Addionally, all instructors at the school have earned a master's degree and/or a doctorate, and several are National Board certified.
[edit] Sports
Due to the association with LSU and the "Tigers," U-High's athletic teams use the "Cubs" as their mascot. U-High plays in the 2A Class in the Louisiana High School Athletic Association, with teams competing in football, boys' and girls' basketball, baseball, softball, boys' and girls' soccer, cross country, track, golf, tennis, volleyball, and boys' and girls' swimming. The main rival for the school is Episcopal High School, particularly in football. As of 2005, U-High began the tradition of dubbing this rivalry game the "Blackout Game," which the Cubs won in the past two match-ups. The swimming team for UHS won state with both its boys' and girls' team in 2006.
