Universities of Applied Sciences

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A University of Applied Sciences (UAS) is a type of higher education institution particular to German-speaking Europe. Universities of Applied Sciences are focused on the transferability of professional skills, but the commitment to academic learning and research puts them on a par with the traditional universities with regard to the educational tier on which they belong. The Swiss lawmaker calls this "separate but equal"[1]. Just like more academically oriented traditional universities, the UAS are able to issue both Bachelor and Master degrees. In Germany, they may also run doctoral programs, which is not allowed in Switzerland at this point except if the degree itself is awarded by a partner institution which has this power.
