Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora (Federal University of Juiz de Fora) - UFJF - is a university located in the city of Juiz de Fora, state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Like other Federal Universities, UFJF is supported finantially by the Brazilian federal government, but it has complete autonomy in its governance. UFJF was founded in 1960 by the union of the Engineering, Medicine, Pharmacy, Economy and Odontology Schools that had already existed in Juiz de Fora at that time. At the end of the 1960s the newly built campus was opened, and since then the number of courses has increased. The campus of UFJF is considered one of the most beautiful in Brazil, due to its large green area, one of the few remaining in the severely depleted and deforested region of Juiz de Fora.

In addition to its main campus, UFJF keeps an application school to provide training for students graduating in its licensure program, Escola João XXIII, and a trade school, Colégio Técnico Universitário (CTU). Both schools are among the best schools in the region, and admission for CTU is very competitive, whereas since it is an application school, admission to João XXIII is by draw.

As of 2004, UFJF is ranked at the top 10 universities in Brazil by the Brazilian Ministry of Education, and its Law School is consistently ranking top in the country, with many of its graduates being nominated to Brazilian higher courts.

It has more than 10,000 students and 27 majors, among them Engineering, Medicine, Law, Physics, Chemistry, Psychology and others.
