The Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara (UAG) is a private university in Mexico located in Guadalajara, Jalisco (the actual main campus is located in Zapopan), and it is the first of its kind in Mexico. The Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara has become one of the best education institutions in all of Latin America, attracting students from Mexico, South America, Puerto Rico, the United States and Canada. Much of its prestige comes from the Medical School. It offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees.

It was founded by students who opposed the imposition of socialist education by the Mexican Government of General Lázaro Cárdenas, after struggles and threats from the Mexican Government in 1935. The university's first name was the Universidad del Occidente which was later renamed Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara, its current and official name. The School's Faculty of Medicine started its first classes on June 5th, 1935,
On March 3, 2005 the university celebrated its 70th anniversary.
The last university Presidents were Dr. Luis Garibay Gutierrez, Dr. Antonio Leaño Alvarez del Castillo and the recently named Lic. Antonio Leaño Reyes.

It is the oldest private medical school in Mexico. The first class was taught on June 5th, 1935, the same year of the school's birthdate and its first residency quarters where located in Tolsa Avenue in Guadalajara, Mexico, in an area donated by Ramon Garibay which later became the university's hospital. Later the hospital was named Hospital Ramon Garibay in honor of its patron

The school's professional football (soccer) team is named Tecos after the university symbol, the Tecolote, which is the Nahuatl word for owl. The team plays in Estadio Tres de Marzo named for the founding date of the institution.
