The U.S. gubernatorial elections of 2005 were held on November 8, 2005. Two states voted to select a governor, as well as other statewide offices and members of state legislatures.

Some have speculated that the effects of the two elections go beyond the two states' borders. Shortly before election day, U.S. President George W. Bush returned from a trip from Latin America to provide last minute campaigning for Virginian gubernatorial candidate Jerry Kilgore. After the defeat of Kilgore and Forrester in New Jersey, Democrats have described these victories as signs of the President's decreasing popularity. Republicans have since tried to contain these Democratic triumphs as victories exclusive to those states and their candidates. Some speculated these two elections shaped the momentum of the Democratic party, and it could be said that they had some effect on the landmark Democratic victories in the 2006 midterm elections. Republicans, however, maintain that the Democrats' advantage in 2005 was due simply to the fact that they were the incumbent party.
