[edit] Future and recent events

The Italian city of Turin hosted the 2006 Winter Olympics, where the United States' medal count was the second largest, smaller than only Germany's. Snowboard Cross was on the Olympic program for the first time. In this event, Seth Wescott earned a gold medal in the men's competition, and Lindsey Jacobellis earned a silver medal in the women's competition.

[edit] History

Tom Burke was the first athlete to represent the United States at the Olympics. He took first place in both the 100 metres and the 400 metres of the 1896 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece.

The United States has hosted both the Summer and Winter Olympics four times.

In 1904, St. Louis, Missouri hosted the World's Fair and the Olympic Games, making the United States the first English-speaking country to host the Olympics. Los Angeles, California has twice played host to the summer Olympic Games: in 1932 and in 1984. Atlanta, Georgia was the host city for the Centennial 1996 Summer Olympics. Centennial Olympic Park was built for the 1996 Summer Olympics.
