United States Naval Ship

United States Naval Ship or USNS is the prefix designation given to non-combat United States Naval ships auxiliary support ships that are in service, but are crewed by civilians. Some civilians are DOD employees, others are employees of contracted-crewing companies. Ships under this designation are primarily support ships such as the USNS Bridge, an underway replenishment ship, USNS Comfort, a Mercy class hospital ship, the USNS Bob Hope, army prepositioning ship, or the USNS Mission Buenaventura, a fleet oiler. All USNS ships are under the command of the Military Sealift Command.
