United Kingdom Canadian community
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Canadians live in the United Kingdom for a variety of reasons. Some veterans of World War I or World War II stayed in Great Britain after the war ended, and settled down and raised a family. The children are Canadians with British citizenship. Other Canadians may be living in Britain temporarily for employment or university study.
There are many clubs, organisations and networks which can be contacted by Canadians and Americans in Britain for information, friendship and support.
One such club is the Cambridge Canadian Club - "Since 1948, Canadians at Cambridge have met for fun and learning, made friendships and contacts, and celebrated their Canadian-ness together at CCC events." (external link here).
North American Expatriates in London, England have set up Network Canada (external link here) as well as American MeetUp (external link here).
A gentlemen's club, The Canada Club, has been established in the United Kingdom since 1810. (external link here).
Canadians in Europe aims to be a "Multilateral, Multi-professional, Multicultural" "Forum for ideas" to achieve co-operation and partnership. They are based at Marlborough, Wiltshire, England.
The Canada UK Colloquia is held alternately in each of the two countries and aims to "increase knowledge and educate the public about the advantages to be drawn from a close and dynamic relationship between the two countries." (external link here)
The Canada House Cine-Club is Britain's only Canadian film club and can be found at Trafalgar Square, London. (external link here)
The Canadian Women's Club was founded in 1932 by two Canadian women. The first meeting attracted 142 women and the membership rapidly expanded. After World War II the club decided to support Canadian veterans living in Britain. By 1953 the organisation of the club had become very expensive so in June of that year a ball was held, the first Maple Leaf Ball. It was great success. The Ball has become an annual event and provides funds for the charities supported by the CWC. (external link here)
Another women's club is The North Atlantic Women's Club Northwood, London, England, which, is open not only to membership from North American women, but also to all international expatriot women in Britain. (external link here)
There is a non-profit organisation to help and support North Americans in Britain. It is called the North American Connection and it has a very useful links page on its site. (external link here) Another site with a good links page is the site belonging to Expatnetwork (external link here)
There is a club in the county of Cheshire called The American Expats of North West England. They offer "support and friendship to American and Canadian expatriates, and others with ties to North America, living in North West England". Their "aim is to help expats enjoy their experience in the North West of England". (external link here)
