[edit] History

Two British-Americans James Erough (1860-1934) and Oliver Donat (1869-1954) established the United Football Association...known as the UTFA.

UTFA was to be originally an offseason league to players in the The Football League. The 1897 to 1903 seasons were played from April to July.

Major League Baseball was killing the market for the teams...so for the 1904 season Erough and Donat announced the league to be played from November to March, during the baseball offseason.

The new plan gave some teams crowds of up to 20,000 fans a game, and made huge profits, teams from New England were the most successful in this. Teams from the West had seats that were only 1¢ per seat, but only drew about 1,000 to 1,500 specatators and made only $15 profits usually. In 1909 the most successful team...Springfield Bristol of Springfield, Massachusetts went on a tour across the United Kingdom, it was reported to play matches against clubs like Manchester United F.C. and Celtic F.C. and win all but one game, but records were lost.

In 1919 the league went defunct because of the formation of a new soccer league know as the American Soccer League, it was feared that because of United States Football Federation funding the ASL would drive UTFA out of business, although a small number of clubs played for a "1920" season.
