Union of UEA Students
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Union of UEA Students is the students' union of the University of East Anglia. All students of the university automatically become members of the union unless they should choose to opt out. The union is a democratic organisation run by its members via an elected executive committee and student council. Post graduate students as well as being members of the Union of UEA Students are also members of the Graduate Students Association a similar body though on a smaller scale to the Union and one of only a few student organisations specifically for post graduate students in the UK

[edit] Democratic Structure
The members of the union elect annually an executive committee of four full time [sabbatical officer]'s and six non-sabbatical officer's. The union does not have a post of president on the executive committee
The full time posts are:
- Academic Officer :- Tessa North
- Communications Officer :- Francis Hamlyn
- Finance Officer :- Eddie Shields
- Welfare Officer :-Stevie Altman
The part time posts are:
- Environment Officer :- Ben Meaker
- Ethical Issues Officer :- Sean Rose
- International Officer:- Cammie Fulmer
- Liberations Officer :- Martin Jopp
- Publicity Officer :- Andy Judson
- Societies Officer :- Nick Kent
- Sports Officer :- Kumaran Veluppillai
- Women's Officer (non-voting) :- Alex Scott
The full time officers meet year round in a management committee to decide on day to day operational matters relating to the Union and its subsidiary companies (these officers also serving as four of the six directors of those companies). The decisions of the management committee are ratified by the full executive committee which meets during the university term time and which is responsible for ensuring the policy of the union (as defined by the union council or policy ballot) is adhered to.
The union council, whose members are elected student representatives from each school of the university and the clubs and societies of the union, in addition to the executive committee, meets a minimum of eight times a year and sets the policy of the union and confirms the actions of the executive committee. The decisions of the Union council may only be overturned by a ballot of all members of the union.
