Union Navy

The Union Navy, also known as the United States Navy, was the naval force that fought for the Union in the American Civil War. It had two principal missions:

  • Naval blockade of Southern seaports, interdicting Southern commerce.
  • Capturing and protecting river systems, in conjunction with the Union Army, in the heart of the Confederacy.
