Union Española was founded on May 18th 1897, by a group of Spanish immigrants in Chile. A memorable year in Union Española's history was 1975, when it lost the Copa Libertadores final against Independiente de Avellaneda.

The club's stadium is Santa Laura, the oldest stadium in Chile. It was founded in 1922.
