Talk:University of Wales, Aberystwyth Debating Union

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This article has been added for two primary reasons. The first is posterity. The society is likely to last for a nunmber of years, perhaps decades if other debating societies within other universities are considered as examples. However, like all university societies, it suffers from a turnover in membership, which means that three years from its foundation, it is likely that all members who witnessed it will be gone. A few years after that, the entire history will be lost and any who would wish to learn the origins of the society of which they are now members (and debating societies are usually quite popular) would not be able to do so as no other record is available. As a well-known and reputable recorder of information, wikipedia is the ideal place to store this history. It is unlikely to be lost, allows updating by future members and is accessable to anyone without fear of lost passwords or obscure domain addresses which plague other e-information media.

Secondly, it is an addition to the growing collection of debating society histories which now exist on wikipedia, including the universities of limerick, oxford, cambridge, dartmouth and others. This is an impressive collection which is maintaining the history of debating for the future and the present. It is an important compendium of knowledge on the subject, comprehensive and easily consulted. On their own, these histories may seem of questionable merit, but together they form an impressive source for any who are interested in such things, a collective history of the activity to which this article contributes.

I will also add verifiable web-links to the University of Wales Aberystwyth Societies' list and the University Debating league tables as proof of existence and activity InconX.

Without the links it had smacked of another vanity article, however it's not an encyclopaedic article right now, what with the casual tone, digs of other universities and the "cutsey" nicknames for office holders, factual problems ("something like that"? either get it right, or don't put it in) talk of the future (wikipedia is not a crystal ball, etc.) Whilst I'm happy-ish to remove the quick delete, this, as it stands, isn't a good entry, it reads more like a myspace page. Plus remember if you are yourself an active member you're not going to be writing with a neutral point of view; something which seems rather obvious right now. --Blowdart 23:04, 18 March 2007 (UTC)

-- I have just completed my first revamp of this article to meet wikipedia standards. The inelegant language remains but links and the like have been added. I am currently considering how to replace the former; it may be that the whole article needs to be rewritten.--InconX 05:01, 8 April 2007 (UTC)
