"My Marine service was a life-changing experience for me. A positive one that had I not had, I most likely would not be standing here today.... In that diverse company I learned to be responsible for others, I learned to depend on others, and to understand what being depended on by others really meant. I learned that there was more to the world than me, and my kind.... I learned there was joy and satisfaction to be had by looking past the mirror. By serving common interests rather than only those of self.... My three years of service connected me to the rest of the world, the world outside myself, and the connection has been permanent.

- Few thoughts on the proposals: Picture.... Not a fan. While I know the context behind it, on pure face value it conveys a bit of "White Man's Burden". Right now with all that is going on it may not be the best portrait to put out there. Bio.... I don't think the article is up to par. Nothing on life after the Marine Corps and I would still rate it at "Start" for right now if given the chance. I think we should at least have a B-Class article in the bio. Quote...I am of the opinion that it is a bit reverential. I would not rule it out completely but I would vote against it right now. I know that I should not be critisizing without offering solutions but I am a bit short on time at the moment. I will throw some ideas out tomorrow or the next day and hopefully we can come to terms with something this week.--Looper5920 11:58, 25 September 2006 (UTC)

- "At the very heart of the Corps and its relationship to each Marine is our service culture. The Marine Corps is sui generis – that is, we have a nature that is distinct from all others. This goes beyond the unique characteristics of our expeditionary Marine Air-Ground Task Forces which are always prepared to be deployed overseas. It, in fact, pertains to our warrior ethos. From the individual Marine to our institution as a whole, our model is the thinking and stoic warrior who fights more intelligently than his enemy and is inured to hardship and challenges." — Commandant of the Marine Corps, General James L. [edit] Highlighting articles featured on the Portal
What do you think of a message on an article's talk page to show that it was featured on the Portal.
Please note:
- I've removed the wikilink to the article name to prevent a self-referential link (as is done with the WPMILHIST WikiProject tags).
- When putting the tag on articles, the <br> tag at the end may need to be removed/moved to prevent an odd line break - depends on the length of the article name.

[edit] Expansion of CMC articles
As I was reading the article on Louis H. Wilson, Jr., 26th CMC, I noticed that his contributions as Commandant are buried in the last paragraph of the section on his military career. I haven't gone over all of the CMC articles, but I guess that either there is nothing specifically mentioned about their accomplishments/changes during their CMC tenure. This is a significant oversight and should be part of an expansion effort on these articles. Something for the future, as there are many other non-stub articles to be created and stubs to be expanded. —ERcheck @ 16:00, 4 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] In the queue
"The Marine Corps has three major goals: making America’s Marines; winning our nation’s battles; and, creating quality citizens. The fact that people are the focus of two of these three goals exemplifies the extent to which we recognize the special trust and confidence that the nation reposes in us for the care and welfare of the young men and women in our charge." — Commandant of the Marine Corps, General James L. Jones, June 13, 2001; statement to the House Armed Services Committee [5]
We recognize that we cannot know for certain what missions and threats we will face in the future, and that, as a result, we need to focus our efforts in such a way as to provide America with weapons platforms that are flexible and robust enough to allow her Marines to excel across the wide spectrum of tasks and environments that they may encounter. — Commandant of the Marine Corps, General James L. Jones, June 13, 2001; statement to the House Armed Services Committee [http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/library/congress/2001_hr/01-07-12jones.htm
"Among the Americans who served on Iwo (Jima) Island, uncommon valor was a common virtue." — Chester W. Nimitz
"A ship without Marines is like a garment without buttons." — Admiral David D. Porter, USN, 1863.

- How about a "Marines in the News" feature box? Maybe not as a continuous feature, but an occasional appearance at the top of the portal when a good story comes up. —ERcheck @ 03:16, 10 April 2006 (UTC)
- I like this idea. The natural feeder for this would be the [http://USMC website which always has articles on Marines and links to newspaper articles on Marines. Great example would be the most recent one about the LtCol who just became the 1st Marine to get over 5000 flight hours. What do you think??--Looper5920 00:04, 17 May 2006 (UTC)
- Go for it. You have the technical know-how to build a new box. I suggest that it go at the top, possibly in the right column, above the "Did you know". —ERcheck @ 00:14, 17 May 2006 (UTC)

- Just started this new box. I am thinking that it should have no more than 3 bullets in it because anymore than that will require alot more attention and upkeep than any one box deserves. I think both internal and external links could be used and articles should show all sides of the spectrum assuming they are legitimate news. Any blogs from disgruntled Marines should not be featured however a note on the Iraq Veterans against the War would be legit if that makes sense. Any thoughts??--Looper5920 09:03, 19 June 2006 (UTC)
- I agree that three is a good number, four at most. I think that only reliable, legitimate new sources should be used. With "developing" stories of a controversial nature, sometimes even mainstream media gets ahead of itself.... so, I think for those stories, it is best to wait until solid news develops. I agree .... no blogs — as reliable sources are a requirement. —ERcheck (talk) @ 03:44, 25 June 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Did you know?
The History & Museum's site for "this month" gives a good list of historical DYKs.
Akin to the main page DYK, I suggest that new USMC articles, if possible, have a DYK Portal entry and if appropriate, nominate for mainpage.
