Unetanneh Tokef

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Unetanneh Tokef or U-netanneh Tokef is a piyyut that has been a part of the Rosh Hashanna liturgy in rabbinical Judaism for centuries. It is inserted in the Amidah, during the Mussaf service. The prayer is eschatological in theme, and discusses the judgments that await humanity. It also asserts that even the severest divine judgment can be ameliorated through charity, repentance and prayer. It is recited as well on Yom Kippur.

It is ascribed to the legendary Amnon of Mainz, though some scholars dispute this authorship.
