Understanding In A Car Crash was the debut single from New Jersey band Thursday's second album, Full Collapse (Victory Records - 2001). It details the story of singer Geoff Rickly's friend dying an untimely death and the singer's psychological struggle in coming to terms with the incident and trying to place himself in his friend's shoes. Many fans consider "Understanding in a Car Crash" to be one of Thursday's most powerful and emotive songs due to its subject matter.

The live version of the song found on the Five Stories Falling EP differs substantially from the album version, featuring an extended ending with additional lyrics.
