[edit] Synopsis

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

After losing her family farm to debt, local beauty pageant winner Rene (Mason), decides to leave town for the big city. Unfortunately, strange meteorites fall to earth near the small New Zealand town, turning the inhabitants into zombies. Rene and some other survivors find refuge in the home of local gun nut and alien abductee Marion (McKay), and attempt to survive the plague of undead.

Marion has a collection of guns and there is a metal fall-out shelter in his basement floor, which the group of survivors, including two police officers, take refuge in. But Marion has not had a chance to stock the shelter with food or water yet. It's still upstairs. The group tries to get to the food but encounter the hoard of zombies again that don't seem to want to die. It is here that Marion has to shoot one in the head and discovers it stays down. They have to abandon the fall-out shelter and head upstairs, which eventually leads them over top of Marion's garage, which contains his van. They secure the van and try to flee only to find a huge barrier surrounding the entire town. Rain continues to fall at regular intervals (as Marion has noticed) and at first seems to turn others into zombies but it is actually a healing rain, from a group of aliens, which cures the zombie plague.

It turns out the aliens are there to help cure the town of the zombie plague from the meteorite shower and keep it from spreading. A surprise ending follows.

Spoilers end here.
