UNC Hospitals (formerly North Carolina Memorial Hospital) is a not-for profit hospital located in Chapel Hill, NC. The Hospital was organized in 1952 as the medical school of the University of North Carolina. In 1989 the North Carolina General Assembly reorganized the hospital and specialty clinics as UNC Hospitals and brought it under state control. Today UNC Hospitals is a 708 bed medical ceter and is one of three level I referral centerals for the the triangle region of North Carolina (the others being Duke University Medical Center in nearby Durham and Wake Medical Center in the capital city of Raleigh, 30 miles southeast of Chapel Hill).
