I have only started participating in categorization about a month and a halk ago so maybe someone with more experience can clear something up for me. How is it that the backlog was hovering around 0 (and always below 1000) before exploding in August. Are there now dedicated bots that are tagging the articles? There was a bit of a discussion over at Special:Uncategorized Pages about what to do - for some reason, each database dump only displayed 1000 articles. So every time the database dump came, there would be a new batch of uncategorized articles but the list would never extend beyond B. People had noticed it for awhile and then in August the bots started auto-tagging uncategorized articles. Crystallina 00:09, 24 September 2006 (UTC)

Please please, someone tell me that this number is completely abnormal! Could it be that we are now getting a rush of articles because of the new way that bots work and that we will not get another 9000 in october! I mean this is almost 1% of the whole Wikipedia... This seems to be the final count for September - unless the bots aren't updated. It'll probably be a few more. Problem letters seem to be B, C (understandable, that's where Special:Uncategorized Pages is), and then a lot of T. Crystallina 03:37, 1 October 2006 (UTC)

D is done. OK, all I did was categorized a bunch of PRODS and Transwikis, but SOMEONE had to categorize them to get them off the list. The good news is E, F and G look relatively short. The REALLY bad news is it's almost November. At this rate we won't get the October backlog done until February or March of 2007. I've just left prods alone. A lot of times I'm tempted to just remove the tag if they don't have a snowball's chance in hell of surviving, but then you never know. Crystallina 11:23, 25 October 2006 (UTC)
Es are good. On the subject of prods; I often lazily put them in a higher level category for speed. If they are deleted, no biggy; if they stay they'll be diffused to a more specific category eventually anyway. Marasmusine 16:25, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

I may be a bit overly optimistic here but I can't believe that the backlog added every month will be as bad as it was in October because bots will (to some small extent) run out of uncategorized articles. Every month, the English wiki grows by about 60K articles and I'm quite confident that less than 1/3 of these are really left uncategorized for more than a few days. Also, it might not be such a bad idea to have a couple of months of backlog as we can expect that some will get categorized by knowledgeable editors before we get there. (Or am I deluding myself?) The backlog is large here because some of these articles are hard to categorise. Most of the first 200 at any given time are very tricky. I haven't delved into the October list too much, but the articles there seem to be easier to do. —Xezbeth 19:01, 31 October 2006 (UTC)

    • It is best to just give them a cursory high-order category. If you remove the tag, there is still a chance the PROD or AFD may not fly, at which point we will still have to categorize them. Usually for these I pick a VERY general category. In the rare case they are kept, they won't end up back on our roles... --Jayron32 02:57, 10 November 2006 (UTC)

OK... Now off to October. It's the biggest month EVER, but considering we knocked out ~500 articles in about 36 hours here, we CAN push through it. With a similar rate (~350 a day) we should be able to kick it in about a month, which would mean we can start NOVEMBER before december is done.
