Umkomaas Drift School

Before the first formal school for Indians in Umkomaas was established, there were a few places at different times where individuals taught a group of children free of charge or for an allowance. These were called "private" schools (this should not be confused with the private schools of today). In 1922 a French man, Mr. W. C. Sissing ran a "private school" at Cragieburn. There was another room of mud under thatch at Roseneath where a teacher of Zulu descent Mr. K. Nkama taught a few pupils. Mr. R. C. Naidoo opened another "private school" at Roseneath later where a certain Mr. David taught for small fee. A few fortunate individuals benefitted from these "private schools".
