[edit] Character outline
Ulquiorra is a male arrancar with melancholic looks. He has dark green lines descending from his eyes, making it appear as if he is crying. He wears typical arrancar clothes: a white jacket, black sash, and a white hakama. However, his jacket seems to have longer coat-tails than others. Like most other arrancar, his hollow hole has moved; it is at the base of his throat as opposed to his chest. The remainder of his hollow mask lies on top of his head, forming a sort of broken helmet. His helmet bears a strong resemblance to the example silhouette of a vasto lorde. Ulquiorra is an Espada, though his rank has yet to be revealed. He appears to be extremely powerful, nullifying an attack from Kisuke Urahara's zanpakutō with his bare hand.
Ulquiorra is a very cold and callous figure, back-fisting his comrade Yammy in his stomach in an effort to get his attention and bring him back to Hueco Mundo. He also deems anyone he does not find of particular interest to be "trash" and therefore expendable. Ulquiorra is also analytical; during his and Yammy's first visit to the human world, he makes several remarks on the humans who confront them, such as theorizing that Orihime Inoue's healing power is a temporal-spatial ability (though at least somewhat correct, this theory is later dismissed by Aizen), remarking how Ichigo's final release can easily get through Yammy's defenses, as well commenting on how Ichigo's power fluctuates between very weak and stronger than his own.
It would appear that Ulquiorra and Grimmjow Jaggerjack are not on good terms. While Ulquiorra allowed Yammy to kill anyone he deemed as "trash", which included Ichigo, Ulquiorra allowed him to live based on his belief that Ichigo may become useful to Aizen in the future, as he suspected that Ichigo would give in to his inner hollow and eventually join their side. Grimmjow's conflicting viewpoint was that Ichigo should have been destroyed outright, as Ichigo could overcome his weakness and grow even stronger. Despite Grimmjow's argument, Aizen trusted Ulquiorra's judgment. This disagreement led to Grimmjow's unauthorized assault on the material world.
[edit] Synopsis
[edit] Arrancar arc
Ulquiorra's first appearance is when he and Yammy come to the human world seeking to collect information on Ichigo Kurosaki. He watches as Yammy fights Chad, Orihime Inoue, Ichigo, Kisuke Urahara and Yoruichi Shihouin, eventually escaping to Hueco Mundo after assessing the situation. Ulquiorra reports back to Aizen in Hueco Mundo with Yammy still in tow, during which he shows Aizen and the other arrancar what he saw by withdrawing his left eye from its socket and shattering it with his hand, forming a mental link with them.
Under Aizen's directive, Ulquiorra leads a second attack on the material world in order to capture Orihime. Acting as a strategist, Ulquiorra has Luppi, Yammy, Wonderwice Margera and Grimmjow Jaggerjack assault Karakura Town in order to draw Orihime out of Soul Society.
He manipulates her into cooperating by show of force, effortlessly dismembering the two shinigami accompanying her, and threatening to kill her friends. Orihime accepts and Ulquiorra and the other Espada leave, as Ulquiorra proclaims their mission a success. Ulquiorra tells Orihime that she has 12 hours to say goodbye to one person, but that person shouldn't be able to detect her presence. He gives her a bracelet to wear during those 12 hours that not only inhibits anyone but an arrancar from detecting her presence, but also allows her to pass through solid objects. Later, after Grimmjow gets his lost arm back thanks to Orihime and her power, Ulquiorra shuts his eyes as though sighing after Grimmjow impales Luppi.
[edit] Hueco Mundo arc
At a meeting of the ten Espada, Ulquiorra is informed of Ichigo's rescue attempt, which he later tells Orihime of. Afterwards, he leaves her and confronts Noitora, another Espada. Ulquiorra says that he has trapped Orihime in a psychological prison from which her loyalty to Aizen is guaranteed. This proves to be false when Orihime resolves to destroy the orb of Distortion by using her power to nullify its very existence. Ulquiorra later approaches Orihime once again, bringing food for her. He taunts her about the inevitable deaths of her friends, earning a slap. He then leaves, threatening to force-feed her if she does not eat. Afterwards, he is seen chatting with Gin about Rukia's confrontation with Aaroniero Arleri.
After Rukia Kuchiki's defeat by Aaroniero Arleri, Ulquiorra confronts Ichigo to confirm her death for him. Since Ichigo doesn't believe him and is unwilling to fight, Ulquiorra adds that it was he who brought Orihime to Hueco Mundo in the first place. This provokes Ichigo into attacking, which Ulquiorra easily parries. Ulquiorra mocks Ichigo for suspecting Orihime in the first place, and the two begin their bout. Ichigo begins by both activating his final release and donning his hollow mask, which catches Ulquiorra off-guard. He is surprised by Ichigo's spiritual pressure, which is almost like that of an arrancar. This allows Ichigo to connect with a getsuga tenshō, the force of which proves too much for Ulquiorra to block bare-handed.
[edit] Powers
Ulquiorra's combat skills are unknown, as he has yet to be involved in direct battle, but he can deflect energy blasts comparable to a cero barehanded, and ripped apart Orihime's shinigami guards without even perceivably moving. He thinks highly of his own strength and is a powerful and trusted member of the Espada, but his arrancar number has yet to be shown. Ulquiorra has the unusual ability to replay events he has seen to others by removing and crushing his left eye, which then turns into dust and flows around those Ulquiorra intends to use it on. The dust shows images of what Ulquiorra has seen during his missions.[1] His eye regenerates after the act.[2]
[edit] Zanpakutō
The name and released state of Ulquiorra's zanpakutō have not been revealed, as he has never been shown using it. The handle is green and the guard has two curved extensions from its shorter sides, giving it an eye-like appearance.
[edit] Appearances in other media
Ulquiorra is the first arrancar to be featured in a Bleach video game, appearing in the third installment of the PSP fighting game series Heat the Soul. He is also in the Wii fighting game Bleach Wii: Hakujin Kirameku Rondo.
