UFC 70: Nations Collide is an upcoming mixed martial arts event to be held by the Ultimate Fighting Championship. The event is currently scheduled for Saturday, April 21, 2007 at the Manchester Evening News Arena in Manchester, England.[1] UFC 70 will be the second UFC event held in the United Kingdom, and the first in Manchester. The first UFC event in the UK was UFC 38: Brawl at the Hall on July 13, 2002. UFC 70 will also be only the seventh UFC event held outside the United States, and the first since UFC 38.
PRIDE FC Open-Weight Grand Prix champion, Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipović, is scheduled to fight heavyweight prospect Gabriel Gonzaga in the main event.[2] Also on the card is former UFC Heavyweight Champion Andrei Arlovski, who will fight PRIDE FC veteran and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt Fabricio Werdum. Additionally, the card features Michael Bisping's first fight in England since winning the The Ultimate Fighter 3 light heavyweight tournament.
Originally scheduled for the card was a bout between The Ultimate Fighter 1 light heavyweight winner Forrest Griffin and Brazilian Lyoto Machida. However, it was announced that Griffin had become ill with a staph infection, and could not compete on the card. Another fighter will be found to compete against Machida.[3] Taking Griffin's place will be light heavyweight David Heath, who is undefeated in the UFC at 2-0.[4]
Tickets went on sale to the general public on February 23. Reports have indicated that the UFC was targeting this event for its debut on HBO, but negotiations with HBO did not turn out as anticipated. As a result, the card will instead air on Spike TV in North America at 9pm EST with a tape delay due to the UFC being unable to secure a pay-per-view advertising slot in time for the event.[5] The card will be broadcast on live on pay-per-view in the United Kingdom on Setanta Sports.[6]
