UE (wireless telephone)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The UE in UMTS (3G) mobile telephone systems is the name given to the User Equipment. This roughly corresponds to the Mobile Station (MS) in GSM systems.

The UE can be, for example, a handheld phone. Alternatively it can be another device such as a card in a laptop computer.

The UE connects to the "Node-B" (3G Base Transceiver Station) as specified in the 25-series of specifications. Radio interface between the UE and the NodeB is called Uu.

[edit] Functionality

UE handles the following tasks:

  • Mobility Management
  • Call Control
  • Session Management
  • Identity Management

towards the Core Network. The corresponding protocols are transmitted transparently via a Node-B, that is, Node-B does not change, use or understand the information. These protocols are also referred to as Non-access stratum protocols.
