[edit] Overview/ Storyline

Cassy, Vern & Gus are three gifted students who go to an enchanted school where they learn about magic and how to use it. One day they receive a strange book in the mail which is also enchanted and can talk. The book says his name is UBOS (Ultimate Book of Spells) and together they must journey to the center of the Earth to stop Zarlak a powerful wizard who is stealing all Earth's magic so he can ultimately escape his prison where he has been banished for many years. This begins a journey of a lifetime for the three students - one they will never forget.

UBOS also focuses on an ordinary boy named Verne, who discovers he has magical powers and becomes a student at a school of wizardry. He befriends a witch named Cassandra ('Cassy' for short) and a half-elf, Gus, who becomes his best friends.

The trio's adventures begin when Cassy receives a mysterious and powerful talking book named UBOS. UBOS becomes the trio's main tool in defeating the evil wizard Zarlac. Their battles with Zarlac and their search for the world's missing magic form the basis of each episode.

Cassy, a third-year junior witch, Gus, a half-elf second-year junior wizard, and Verne, a logical kid who can't grasp the idea of magic. The three heroes must go through underground caverns filled with dangerous creatures in order to find the world's missing magic, of course they have a little help from their book, friend and loyal magical companion U.B.O.S.

[edit] Harry Potter Controversy

Many have noted the similarities between UBOS and J.K. Rowling's phenomenally popular Harry Potter series [1].

The similarities between the TV show and series of books include:

  • The setting - a school of witchcraft and wizardry which is inhabited by ghosts.
  • The main characters - A boy who discovers he has magical powers and is destined to use them to battle the magical world's greatest villain (Verne/Harry), a witch (Cassy/Hermione) and a quirky young sorcerer (Gus/Ron).
  • The villain - Zarlac is not only reminiscent of Harry Potter's arch nemesis, Lord Voldemort, but is referred to as `The Un-Named One', much as Voldemort is known as `He Who Must Not Be Named'.
  • One of the teachers (the headmistress) can turn herself into a Cat (Ms Crystalgazer/Professor McGonagall)

Although there is little evidence the most likely reason for show's short run was due to the threat of legal action by J.K. Rowling.
