The UAAP Season 68 is the 68th season of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines. Several events were held, the most prominent was the basketball tournament. The tournament is divided into three divisions: the Juniors tournament for high school students, the Women's tournament for female college students, and the Men's tournament for male college students

The FEU Tamaraws swept the defending champions La Salle Green Archers, 2 games to none in the Men's tournament to take their record-tying 18th title, with Arwind Santos as the Finals MVP. It was a rematch of the 2004 Final, where the Archers prevailed, 2-1.

In the juniors division, the De La Salle Zobel Junior Archers swept the UPIS Junior Maroons, 2-0, to take their first UAAP title. It was also La Salle's first Juniors title since the 1955 La Salle Green Hills championship in the NCAA.

In the Women's tournament, the Ateneo Lady Eagles swept the Adamson Lady Falcons, 2 games to none, to win their first UAAP women's title. The Lady Eagles snapped the Lady Falcons' two year title run.

[edit] Third-seed playoff

Since La Salle, Ateneo and UE finished the eliminations with identical 10-4 cards, the quotient system was used. La Salle emerged with the best quotient among the three, so UE and Ateneo figured for a one-game playoff for the third seed. The winner will face the second seed, while the loser will face the first seed. The top two seeded teams possess the twice-to-beat advantage.

[edit] Individual awards

  • Most Valuable Player: Arwind Santos (FEU)
  • Mythical Five: Santos (FEU), Mark Isip (FEU), Joseph Yeo (La Salle), Lewis Alfred Tenorio (Ateneo), Edwin Asoro (NU)

[edit] Semi-finals

These are the semi-final matchups for the 2005 Playoffs:

  • (1) Far Eastern University Tamaraws vs. (4) University of the East Red Warriors
    • This was the same as last year's matchup, where the second seed Tamaraws triumped over their Recto rivals. In the elimination round, UE gave FEU its first defeat in the campaign.
  • (2) De La Salle University-Manila Green Archers vs. (3) Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles
    • Ateneo-La Salle games are the most attended games in the UAAP, for it is the most well-known rivalry in Filipino sport. This year, however, La Salle proved their mastery against the Blue Eagles as they blew out their two elimination round games.

The team with the higher seed owns the twice to beat advantage.

ABS-CBN's affiliate, Studio 23, broadcast the Final Four games.

  • September 25, 2005, Araneta Coliseum, Quezon City
    • (2) La Salle 74, (3) Ateneo 57
      • La Salle advances to the Finals.
      • La Salle's domination of Ateneo continued in the match, as Blue Eagle L.A. Tenorio ended his UAAP career with cramps.
    • (1) FEU 78, (4) UE 57
      • FEU advances to their third consecutive Finals appearance.
      • The Tams avenged their second round loss against UE, as Arwind Santos outclassed the UE defense.

(1) Far Eastern University Tamaraws vs. (2) De La Salle University-Manila Green Archers

This will be the rematch of the 2004 Finals, where the Green Archers prevailed with a J.V. Casio trey at crunch time.

ABS-CBN's affiliate, Studio 23, broadcast the Finals.

  • September 29, Araneta Coliseum, Quezon City
    • (1) FEU 75, (2) La Salle 73
      • FEU leads best of three series, 1-0.
      • A close game all through out, FEU's Arwind Santos scored the last five points to game to turn the three point deficit to a two point win. After the game, La Salle assistant team manager Manny Salgado hit Santos at the back of the head. This led to a near riot inside the Coliseum. The UAAP board eventually banned Salgado for life in any UAAP game.
  • October 6, Araneta Coliseum, Quezon City
    • (1) FEU 73, (2) La Salle 71
      • FEU wins best of three series, 2-0. Arwind Santos named Finals MVP. Bert Flores wins Coach of the Year award.
      • Just like in Game 1, the game was a nail-biter. However, Santos' teammates changed the flow of the game on the last ninety seconds. A Jonas Villanueva drive (son of Bro. Eddie Villanueva), a Mark Isip three point play (off a Joseph Yeo foul) and Villanueva's freethrow (off a Ty Tang foul), sealed the game, and the championship, for the Tamaraws.

[edit] Suspension of De La Salle University

Controversy surrounded the UAAP after De La Salle University (DLSU) discovered that two members of its men's basketball team were ineligible to play in the UAAP from the 2003-2004 up to the 2005-2006 season. The players failed Department of Education's Philippine Educational Placement Test Certificate of Rating (PEPTCR, a replacement for a high school diploma). The University has offered to return the 2004 championship and 2005 runner-up trophy and file a leave of absence from the league.

In its meeting on April 21, 2006 in Adamson University, members of the UAAP Board unanimously decided to suspend DLSU in all sports events of the UAAP for the entire 2006-2007 season as a consequence of the university's negligence and inaction against the two ineligible players.
