[edit] Termini

The highway's eastern terminus is Norway, Michigan at U.S. Highway 2 in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan near the border with Wisconsin. The western terminus is in Forest Lake, Minnesota at Interstate 35.[2]

[edit] Historic Termini

The original western terminus was at U.S. Route 61 in Wyoming, Minnesota. From Chisago City US 8 followed what is now Chisago County Route 22 to Wyoming. In 1931 the highway was extended into downtown Minneapolis at the intersection of 3rd Avenue and Washington Avenue. At the time US 12 and 52 ran along Washington Avenue and US 65 ran on the other side of 3rd Avenue and also ended at this intersection. In 1978, with ongoing construction and completion of Interstate 35W, US 8 was truncated to the I-35W/New Brighton Blvd interchange. In 1981 it was truncated again to its current terminus in Forest Lake.[3]

The original eastern terminus was to be in Powers, Michigan at the junction of US 2 and US 41. The route originally was co-signed with US 141 north from Pembine, Wisconsin to US 2 between Iron Mountain and Quinnesec, Michigan. It is unclear if it was ever co-signed with US 2 east to Powers. US 8 was shifted to its current terminus in Norway, MI in 1929.
