U.S. Route 1 Alternate is a bannered highway forming a loop off of U.S. Route 1 between Washington, D.C., and Hyattsville, Maryland.

In the District of Columbia, U.S. 1 Alternate splits from U.S. 1 at the corner of 6th Street and New York Avenue, N.W. U.S. 1 Alternate follows New York Avenue (which is also U.S. Highway 50) eastward to Bladensburg Road, N.E., and then splits off from New York Avenue to follow Bladensburg Road into Prince George's County, Maryland. In Maryland, U.S. 1 Alternate follows Bladensburg Road and then Baltimore Avenue into Hyattsville, where it rejoins U.S. 1 at Rhode Island Avenue.

In the 1940s, this route was known as Bypass US 1, and was cosigned with U.S. Route 50 Alternate and Maryland Route 411.
