From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

U-F2 was a French submarine that was known as La Favorite prior to its capture by the Germans in the June of 1940. The Germans took the boat at a dockyard as a prize during World War II. Approximately one year later, in May of 1941, the boat received its new title of U-F2. It was a Type Aurore, a French design.

[edit] Career

The boat, known at the time as La Favorite, was launched in September 1938. It is not known to have participated in any patrols. However, it did take part in training, under 5th Flotilla (Kiel), from November 1942 to October 1943. It also served under a school boat, U-Abwehrschule (Bergen), from November 1943 to July 1944.

[edit] Fate

The submarine was renamed UF-2 on 13 May 1941. It was commissioned into the German Navy on 5 November 1942 and declared 'out of service' on 5 July 1944. U-F2 was scuttled at Gotenhafen in 1945.

[edit] Other French submarines captured in WWII

UF-1 was another French submarine that was captured by the Germans. Originally known as L'Africaine, it was, like U-F2, taken as a prize from its dockyard in June 1940. She was renamed UF-1 on 13 May 1941. However, she was never completed during the German occupation of France. She was finally launched on 7 December 1946. U-F1 was taken out of service in 1961 and was striken on 28 February 1963 as the Q334.

UF-3 was also taken as a German prize at the dockyard in June 1940. Her name was altered from L'Astrée to UF-3 on 13 May 1941, but she too was never completed during the German occupation of France, and she was never operational in German service. The boat was taken out of service in 1962, and striken on 27 November 1965 as the Q404.

[edit] Commanders

The submarine was initially commanded by Krvkpt. Georg Lange, who served from November 1942 to October 1943. He lost command due to the loss of the boat. Oblt. Heinrich Gehrken, served from the time Georg Lange lost the boat, until July 1944.

[edit] Other information

La Favorite was laid down in 1937, at Worms, France, and was commissioned by Georg Lange, the original commander of the ship, on 5 November 1941. U-F2 was later commissioned into the service of Nazi Germany.
