[edit] The name
The municipality (originally the parish) is named after the farm Tysvær (Norse Teitsfjörðr), since the first church was built there. The first element is the genitive case of the old male name Teitr, the last element is fjörðr m 'fjord'.
[edit] Coat-of-arms
The coat-of-arms is from modern times (1984). It shows a heron.
