Tyrone, Pennsylvania

Tyrone is a borough in Blair County, Pennsylvania, 15 miles (24 km) northeast of Altoona, on the Little Juniata River. Tyrone was of considerable commercial importance in the twentieth century. It was an outlet for the Clearfield coal fields, and it was noted for the manufacture of paper products. There were planing mills, and chemical and candy factories. In 1900, 5,847 people lived here; in 1910, 7,176; and in 1940, 8,845 people resided here. The population was 5,528 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Altoona, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Tyrone is located at 40°40′29″N, 78°14′29″W (40.674681, -78.241258)GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 5.2 km² (2.0 mi²), all land.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 5,528 people, 2,381 households, and 1,507 families residing in the borough. The population density was 1,056.6/km² (2,736.6/mi²). There were 2,567 housing units at an average density of 490.7/km² (1,270.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the borough was 98.86% White, 0.33% African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.11% Asian, 0.14% from other races, and 0.45% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.54% of the population.

There were 2,381 households out of which 27.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.0% were married couples living together, 13.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.7% were non-families. 32.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.27 and the average family size was 2.87.

In the borough the population was spread out with 22.5% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 27.8% from 25 to 44, 20.7% from 45 to 64, and 21.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 84.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 79.6 males.

The median income for a household in the borough was $29,393, and the median income for a family was $37,818. Males had a median income of $29,361 versus $21,371 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $15,285. About 14.8% of families and 17.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 28.5% of those under age 18 and 10.3% of those age 65 or over.

The film actor Alan C. Beckwith came from this town, as did inventor and band leader Fred Waring.

Tyrone won the Pennsylvania AA State Football Championship in 1999.
