Tyrogue (バルキー Barukī?, Balkie in original Japanese language versions) is a fictional character from the Pokémon franchise.

Tyrogue's name is derived from the words tyro, a term for a beginning student, referring to it being a pre-evolution of Fighting-type Pokémon, and rogue. The 'rogue' in Tyrogue's name most likely refers to its rogueish, loner personality.

[edit] Biological characteristics

Tyrogue is a small, pale-purple skinned humanoid fighter with bandage-like cloths wrapped around its torso and wrists. It looks like it would be an expert at both fist and foot fighting, as Tyrogue in general have not yet "chosen" which fighting they will master (see "In the Video Games" section below).

Tyrogue are always bursting with energy. They will attack and fight any target without warning or provocation and will continue to fight even after defeat. They must train everyday to prevent becoming overstressed, and have been known to practice several different fighting styles.

[edit] In the video games

Tyrogue can not be found in the wild in any Pokémon game. In Gold and Silver it is only obtainable by defeating a karate master training in Mount Mortar. Defeating a trainer in order for them to give you their Pokémon, while uncommon, is not entirely unheard of in the Pokémon games, as Hitmonchan and Hitmonlee were acquired in Red and Blue the same way. In Pokémon Crystal Tryogue might hatch out of the Egg the daycare owners give you.

The way Tyrogue chooses which of its three evolutions it will evolve into is also unusual. If its attack stat is higher than its defense stat when it reaches Level 20, then it will evolve into Hitmonlee. If its defense is higher than its attack, then it will evolve into Hitmonchan. If its attack and defense stats are equal, then it will evolve into Hitmontop. However this doesn't mean that Tyrogue's Trainer has no say into which one of its three evolutions it evolves into. To achieve the desired evolution, one must carefully monitor its Attack & Defense stat before it reaches Level 20. The use of Pokemon stat enhancers, Protein (which raises the Attack stat) and Iron (which raises the Defense stat) can be used to increase the desired stat. Tyrogue Nature can also be a factor as a Pokemon's Nature can effect how it stats grow.

Since Tyrogue and all of its evolutions are only male, the only way to get a Tyrogue from an egg is if you breed any of its evolutions with Ditto.

It is possible for Tyrogue to be able to learn several of it's evolutions signature moves like Hitmonlee's Hi Jump Kick, Hitmonchan's Mach Punch, and Hitmontop's Rapid Spin (it can also learn Hitmonlee's Mind Reader) as egg moves. Tyrogue is capable of learning & knowing all of these though careful breeding. One must breed a Tyrogue from one of its evolutions (that knows the desired move from that evolution) with a Ditto, then raise that Tyrogue (once it has hatched from its egg) into one of its other evolutions (one of the evolutions other than the one it was bred from) and breed it (once it has learned the desired move from that evolution), then raise that Tyrogue into its remaining evolution and breed it (once it has learn the desired move from that evolution). If bred carefully & correctly the final Tyrogue will know Hi Jump Kick, Mach Punch, Rapid Spin, and Mind Reader. Tyrogue is a great example of how careful breeding and patience can produce amazing results.

[edit] In the anime

In episode #235, A Tyrogue Full Of Trouble, a lone Tyrogue is abandoned by its trainer, and gains a cold attitude toward trainers and Pokémon that are bigger than it. It then creates a gang of fighting Pokémon consisting of Mankey and Primeape and goes around fighting and harassing travelers. It is saved from a falling boulder by a man, softening its disposition, and later joins the man. Strangely enough, Dexter, the Pokédex claims that a Hitmonlee, Hitmonchan or Hitmontop evolves into Tyrogue, although it is really the other way around.

[edit] In the trading card game

Tyrogue has had three appearances in the Pokémon Trading Card Game, twice as a baby Pokémon and once as a basic Pokémon. The expansions where it made these appearances are Neo Discovery, E-Aquapolis, and EX Unseen Forces.
