[edit] World book encyclopedia

Hello, my 2006 World Book encyclopedia on DVD states:

Order in Council is a decree issued by the British Crown when a matter of great importance confronts the nation. Orders in Council get their name from the fact that they are proclaimed with the advice of the Privy Council. In 1807, Britain issued Orders in Council in answer to Napoleon's threat to blockade the island empire. By these orders, British ships blockaded the European coast and kept neutral trading vessels from entering ports of Napoleonic Europe. See also CONTINENTAL SYSTEM; PRIVY COUNCIL.

  • The British made their greatest concession in June of 1812 just as the United States was declaring war. On June 16 - two days before the declaration of war - Lord Castlereagh, the British foreign secretary announced in Parliament that the Order in Council would be suspended.
  • Mahon, John. The War of 1812. ISBN 0306804298 Page 35 states:
  • Forty-one days after Congress declared war, the word arrived in London on 29 July. Two days later, 31 July 1812, the Ministry ordered its first counter-measures. It for bade English ships to sail except in convoys and restarined American ships in English ports. The Orders in Council had been repealed on 23 June adn the ministers di not intend to take additional measures until they could learn the American reaction. Word of the repeal of the Orders did not reas Presiden Madison until 12 August, this figty days larter. Even then he refused to halt hostilities becasue he did not know how Britain had reacted to the declarartion of war.
  • Hitsman, J. The Incredible War of 1812. ISBN 1896941133 page 48 states:
  • On the very day that the Minister took his formal leave of the United States, June 23, a new British Government headed by Lord Liverpool provisionally repleade the Order in Council.
  • Perkins, B. The Causes of the War of 1812. ISBN 0882754084 Page 8 stats
  • June 23 - Repeal of order in council

Based on these citations I believe the initial repeal announcement was made on June 16, 1812 and the repeal was completed on June 23, 1812, so I will make these amendments to the Chronology of the War of 1812.

[edit] Orders in Council (1807)

I added a section called Repeal of the Orders in Council at the bottom of the article that explains what happened to stop confusion in the future. SirIsaacBrock 21:56, 23 April 2006 (UTC)
