The TWU Renegades are a male recreational ice hockey team, composed of Trinity Western University staff, alumni, and friends, playing in British Columbia, Canada's Cross-Mainland Church Hockey League. The Renegades are prone to winning games by outscoring their opponents as opposed to playing a rigorous team defence. They are also prone to visiting the restaurant establishment Denny's after each game, where they partake in food, fellowship, and Razz-Dangos. The Renegades finished 16-1-3 in 2006-2007 CMCHL regular season play and were eliminated in the semifinals by the KCC Cougars.

[edit] Franchise history

The TWU Renegades hockey club origins were rooted in the lack of opportunities to play hockey at Trinity Western University. Two teams, the Titans (competitive) and Bombers (recreational) were not nearly enough to meet the demand of students, let along staff and alumni. After the Bombers decided to only sign current students, TWU Bomber alumni Dave MacDonald and Joe Ducklow decided to form a new team for staff, alumni, and friends. After discarding the team name 'Leafs', and seeing a poster that perked their interest, they settled on the name RENEGADES. After getting 8 or 9 friends to commit to the team, the Renegades started the regular season with Brian Hammond, Joe Ducklow, Dave MacDonald, Billy Wilms, Matt Campbell, Dave Zanbergen, Griffin Seed, Leigh Hammond, and Tim Booker. Despite an early surge of scoring that led them to a 6-1 score, the Renegades blew the lead and lost 7-6 to the Willingdon Avalanche. After some recruitment, the Renegades strengthened their roster with Jon Saltel, Ron Smouter, Brian Paetkau, Brian Bevilaqua and Ryan Shantz. With a second-place finish, the 'Gades seemed poised to make a playoff run. However, they lost to the eventual cup winners as the TWU Bombers squad dispatched them in the semifinals.

Year 2 saw the 'Gades improve even more with the addition of Pat Spohr and Glenn Visscher. Hard-working forward Jaben Schalk also discovered the men in blue and greatly enjoyed playing the late nights with the squad. However, year 2 also saw the departure of funny-man goalie Mike Harloff. However, Kevin Visscher was a worthy replacement, coming up with huge saves that gave the team a chance to win games. Halfway through the year Calvin Daling suited up as a sub and ended up sticking with the team. Second year highlights including the 'Gades first victory over the league defensive powers PCC Desert Dogs and TWU Bombers. However, the first round of the playoffs placed the 'Gades against the eventual champions again as the underdog Willingdon Avalanche beat the top 4 seeds in the final 4 weeks of the year.

Year 3 added Mike Beach, Wesley Moreman, and Dr. Back. Furthermore, the Denny's tradition of comraderie was born this year.
