Two on a Tower

Two on a Tower is a novel by Thomas Hardy, published in 1882. It recounts the tragic love affair between a young astronomer of mixed birth, Swithin St Cleeve, and Lady Viviette Constantine, the widow of the local landowner. Her initial attachment to him results from the utter boredom of her life, waiting without hope of news from her absent husband, satisfying his mania for hunting lions in darkest Africa, but having extracted a promise from her prior to departure that she will live like a recluse in his absence. The story itself has elements of melodrama, with something of an over-reliance on coincidences of timing. The character of both the protagonists is nevertheless so sympathetically sketched as to make it one of Hardy's most memorable novels.
Wimborne was the location of the "Warborne", and Charborough House was the location of the "Welland House" in Two on a Tower.[1]
