[edit] Advice

Hello. Before making potentially controversial edits, it is recommended that you discuss them first on the article's talk page. Otherwise, people might consider your edits to be vandalism. Thank you. Addhoc 22:00, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Blacon picture

Hello. Just to let you know that I wasn't the person who queried the Blacon pic - with the info given, it's fine, though you should add the the {{GFDL}} tag to the image page so that it can be categorised properly, rather than just writing the info. I'd also advise removing your personal email from that page, as it may well attract spam. Cheers. Loganberry (Talk) 00:50, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] More on Blacon

Okay, I've left North West England alone now, though it's rather non-standard for geographical articles to use that form, so don't be surprised if someone else changes it in due course.

However, I don't think you're taking my point about POV. The whole point about the NPOV policy is that truth alone is not enough; every fact must be both true and written in a neutral tone. I happen to think that Stirling Moss was the greatest racing driver never to be world champion, and most people would agree with me, but that does not mean that I can write it in his article as fact. Loganberry (Talk) 00:58, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Link

Why did you add an external link about Chester, UK to a page about West Chester, USA? Deizio talk 17:33, 11 December 2006 (UTC)

...because the town/city/county has 'Chester' in the name. I am born in Chester and just thought the Americans in Westchester might find it fascinating to see pictures, and read information about Roman Chester, England. If you don't agree - take it out, by all means. Twinney12 17:54, 11 December 2006 (UTC)

Please don't make any such edits in future. Ensure content is directly relevant to the subject at hand. Your idea may have been well intentioned but ultimately adding inappropriate external links is spamming, a form of vandalism. Deizio talk 17:59, 11 December 2006 (UTC)

On another matter, please don't include ~~~~ in your edit summaries. It doesn't add a signature, your user name is included in the page history automatically, and signatures are generally only for posts on discussion pages. Deizio talk 18:02, 11 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Blacon

The Blacon article, which you appear to have been a significant contributor to, is a little out of step with several Wikipedia guidelines and policies regarding e.g. style, external links and content. I also removed from the talk page a large portion of text which appeared to be lifted from an external source, rather than a discussion about the article. I applaud your enthusiasm for the article, if you could address some of my concerns it will only improve it. The extra text in the references section is a particular "sore thumb" in the piece at the moment. Deizio talk 18:17, 11 December 2006 (UTC)

I agree! I have removed all extra text in the ref section, leaving only the references themselves.

The article and associated history tend to disagree with that statement. Deizio talk 18:32, 11 December 2006 (UTC)

Give me a chance cock!! I've just done it!

I think calling fellow editors (whether or not they are also administrators) "cock" when they're trying to help you improve an article you have a great fondness for is discouraged in a policy somewhere. Want me to look for it or shall we play nice? Deizio talk 18:44, 11 December 2006 (UTC)

For your information there is a greeting, an expression, used in London which goes "alright me ol' cock sparra" This is often shortened to 'alright cock'! To call someone 'cock' is not offensive or demeaning to them in anyway whatsoever. So for you to threaten me with some kind of retribution, as you just have, is an appalling faux pas on your behalf. I can only say to you... Calm down, Calm down son, and stop being so small minded and petty!Twinney12 12:21, 13 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Copyright violation - Pathfinder uk govt

This article has now been deleted as copyvio since it was taken from a website without demonstrating specific permission. Please be careful since Wikipedia has a zero tolerance policy on copyright violations. TerriersFan 01:33, 12 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Question

Mr. TerriersFan, My question refers to the above. I didn't need permission as there was a link to download the .PDF file. There are some relevant pages about Blacon on the govt's pathfinder site which can be downloaded, but cannot be viewed ON that site. To view them you have to download them. Can I upload them to the Blacon Wiki for readers to view, as I do with an image? Cheers for the edits, the site is looking well! Twinney12 12:48, 13 December 2006 (UTC) Tony

Sorry, but you did need permission since whether you viewed it, or downloaded it, the copyright rested with the author. I linked the Blacon article to the Word document directly, but you deleted the link. I have now linked the article to the webpage. If there are further resources, to which you wish to refer, then it's fine to link to them but there is no provision to embed Word, PDF, etc. files in the article. Please let me know if I can help, further. TerriersFan 23:35, 13 December 2006 (UTC)
As a further thought, if you are unhappy with the grounds for the deletion of your article you can appeal, using the procedures here.TerriersFan 00:50, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
Hi! With reference to your comments: "This article has now been deleted as copyvio since it was taken from a website without demonstrating specific permission." Sorry to labour this point, but I did not need permission to view the article or to download the article in question - nor does everyone in the world who visits the pathfinder site. If we did need permission there would have been a request written on the download page, surely?!
By allowing one to download the file the author(s) are showing they are not concerned with copyright. I would of course have credited the article with a reference or footnote, but had 'parked' it on that discussion page while I was thinking how to link to it. We're not all Wiki experts, ya know! Twinney12 08:47, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
Sure the copyright rests with the author - but since they placed the article to be freely downloaded by anyone, is 'copyright' even an issue here?
I guess I have failed to persuade you so I would simply ask that you accept my judgement though YMMV. As I said before, if you continue to think that the article should not have been deleted you still have the WP:DRV option, though I would counsel against it. TerriersFan 05:24, 15 December 2006 (UTC)

To me:..."if you continue to think that the article should not have been deleted" I don't think, and have not suggested, that the article in question should NOT have been deleted - where did you get THAT from?!!

I am arguing that copyright here is not an issue, because the government allows ANYONE, WITHOUT PERMISSION to download the pathfinder report. It is you who keep harping on about 'copyright'; I said earlier "I would of course have credited the article with a reference or footnote, but had 'parked' it on that discussion page while I was thinking how to link to it."

We have a separate page for Blacon railway station could we have a separate page for, say, 'Blacon Pathfinder Report' or is that going into too much detail?

[edit] Good Idea

Keep up the good work the site is looking better and more professional every day. Kind Regards,Tony Twinney12 10:15, 15 December 2006 (UTC)

Moving on ...
The general principle is that all information should be kept together in the one article. The reasons are:
  • It is easier for the reader to navigate within one article using the Contents than to job between several different articles.
  • It provides a better overview of the topic.
There are times when breaking out separate articles is correct:
  • When the topic is independently notable.
  • When the length of a section is such that it would overbalance the main article.
  • When the article exceeds the optimum length (don't worry about this one - a clear warning is given when you start to edit any article that is too long).
The Station article was just fine since stations are considered independently notable - there are many readers interested in them who don't want to flog through locality articles to get at the info.
The Pathfinder material, though, is not independently notable, the main article is not too long and the section does not overbalance the article. A new page for Pathfinder is therefore contraindicated.
To further develop the article I would suggest the following:
  • Two or three /sourced/ examples (perhaps from the website of your local paper) of tangible improvements brought by Pathfinder.
  • A paragraph on Blacon High School, sourcing why it became a specialist school. Specialist schools are also independently notable so, if there is enough material, an article could be started on it (if you decide to, speak with me first and I will point you to a good practice article to model on).
  • Anything you can source on policing issues in the area.
  • Photographs of:
    • Blacon High School
    • The police HQ
    • The station as it is now (tarmac track or whatever). A photo taken from a similar position to that of the old photo would be really cool.
