Tveit

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tveit was municipality of Norway from 1837 until 1964, but is now a part of Kristiansand and host to the city's airport Kjevik. Tveit occupies the mouth of the river Tovdalselva (also known as Topdalselva) and was the birthplace of Norwegian-American aviator Bernt Balchen.

The population is approximately 2,831 (2004).

The name 'Tveit' comes from the Old Norse þveit, meaning 'a piece of cleared land, cut from a forest', or one who lives in such a place. As such, 'Tveit' also appears as a surname, as does its English counterpart 'thwaite'. [1]
