[edit] Format

All newscasts on TVB Jade are in Cantonese, except Putonghua Financial Report, which is in Putonghua (aka Mandarin). Good Morning Hong Kong and Putonghua Financial Report are seen Monday to Saturday, and other business newscasts are seen on weekdays. Also, programmes have in-vision captions for the hearing impaired, as mandated by local regulations (this was originally only used on the Jade version's News File). In the early days of TVB News, both channels aired a 5-minute News File, giving the top headlines of the day and a preview of the News Roundup; it usually aired at varied times around the 9:00 p.m. hour. (Earliest at 9:00, latest at 9:30)

The starting sequence of the news features the sound of Morse Code. The sound heard corresponds to the Morse Code signal for "Today News".

Standalone weather reports are aired after the News at 6:30 p.m. on TVB Jade and the News at 7:30 p.m. on TVB Pearl. They are famous for Freddy (天氣先生), a cartoon figure which gives the forecast for the next day. The highly stylized and comical format is considered an institution, and is widely recognized by many Hong Kong people. (The rest of the weather forecast is read by an actual human presenter.)

[edit] News programmes

Investigate reporting and long news stories are often shown on three programmes: Tuesday Report (星期二檔案) and News Magazine (新聞透視) on TVB Jade and The Pearl Report (明珠檔案) on TVB Pearl. Tuesday Report and The Pearl Report focus more on stories involving individuals and has a softer approach, while News Magazine focuses more on social problems in general.

[edit] Controversy

Controversy erupted in mid-2004 when TVB news introduced two inexperienced, yet attractive, female journalists to anchor TVB Jade's flagship 6:30PM News. Both presenters were recent university graduates and had only joined TVB News Channel for a few months before being switched to TVB Jade. This caused much consternations among the public and within TVB News because the anchor chair on the 6:30 News is usually reserved for those who are most experienced.

[edit] News channel

Additionally, TVB's news department is also responsible for the output on the 24-hour news channel, TVBN(無綫新聞台), carried on the pay TV platform TVB Pay Vision (無綫收費電視). On June 2006, another news channel, TVBN 2(無綫新聞2台), will also be carried on the pay TV platform TVB Pay Vision.
