Turtling is the hunting of turtles, a practice formerly a big part of the economy in many nations of the West Indies. In recent times, however, it has become outlawed.

Turtling is also a dinghy sailing term referring to when the boat is fully inverted ie the mast is pointing down to the seabed. This usually happens if a capsize is not righted fast enough.

In RTS games, turtling means that 'turtling' player attempts to hold only one easily defendable spot. A commonly held assumption is that these players have no chance to win (though it can take some time to bring them down). In reality, it is another strategy of playing, though in general terms (especially as compared to military history) it is a weaker strategy than offensive actions.
"Turtling" in gaming is a fairly general term that can be applied to many different types of games, generally referring to the process of playing almost exclusively defense either as a stalling tactic or in the hopes that an opponent overreaches himself. In fighting games, for example, a "turtler" often constantly retreats, sticking out safe pokes and building meter while hoping an opponent makes a drastic mistake in an attempt to crack the defensive actions of the turtler.

In the US, turtling is also a prank where one or more students at a school will distract a "victim" student, while an accomplice empties the victim's backpack, turns it inside out, puts the contents back in and zips the inverted backpack up again. This prank can also be done to someone while they have left their backpack unattended. Many teenagers also keep count of their record, gaining one point for turtling someone else, while losing a point for being turtled. The turtle-on-the-run is also quite effective, which involves turtling someone's backpack while being chased by that person.

Turtling is the urgent action describing a bowel movement. It is namely called this in relation to when fecal mater drops from the anal organ (and sometimes returning to its resting place) which resembles a turtle's head poking in and out of its shell.
