Turramurra (an Aboriginal term meaning "Big Hill") is a suburb of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, part of the Ku-ring-gai Local Government Area. It is located approximately 14 kilometres from the Sydney central business district (20 kilometres by road) and has a population of about 20,000 residents. Turramurra is a very hilly suburb with large residential blocks, about 170 metres above sea level, and currently has the highest average rainfall in the Sydney metropolitan area.

[edit] Central Turramurra

Central Turramurra is the main region of Turramurra and is on top of a ridge. It is based on the Pacific Highway (Metroad 1) and the North Shore railway line with Turramurra railway station being the CityRail station which serves Turramurra. There is also a major bus station next to the railway station, which is served by Shorelink buses. The main Turramurra shops are in Central Turramurra, which is based on the Pacific Highway and Rohini Street. On the southern boundary, bordering with Pymble is Sheldon Forest, notable for its stands of blue gums and turpentines.

North Turramurra is all of the area which is north of Burns Road. Bobbin Head road runs in a north-south fashion all along North Turramurra. The North Turramurra shops are near the centre of North Turramurra, next to North Turramurra Public School. Further north are Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park and Ku-ring-gai Creative Arts High School. Shorelink bus route 577 runs through North Turramurra.

South Turramurra is all of the area south of the Commenara Parkway and is centred around Kissing Point Road. South Turramurra is bordered by Lane Cove National Park and many bush walks start or run through here, including the Great North Walk. Turramurra High School is in South Turramurra, along with Turramurra Public School. Shorelink bus route 571 runs along Kissing Point Road.

Ku-ring-gai_Council has several sporting fields in the area, including a large tennis & netball facility at the end of Canoon Road.

East Turramurra is an unofficial urban locality of Turramurra. It is situated in the area of Turramurra east of Bobbin Head Road. It has a little shopping area called Princes Street Shops. Shorelink route 579 runs through East Turramurra as well as a small number of 577 buses.

20th century Australian painter Grace Cossington Smith lived at 43 Ku-ring-gai Avenue, Turramurra for most of her life.

Governor-General of Australia John Kerr lived on the corner of Kissing Point Road and Catalpa Crescent for part of his life.

Leader of the New Guard Eric Campbell Entry in Australian Dictionary of Biography lived at Boongala, 28 Ku-ring-gai Avenue for some of his life.

Premier of New South Wales, 1986 - 1988, Barrie Unsworth lived in Geoffrey Street for some of his life.

There are plans to redevelop the area in and around the town centre of Turramurra, which involves five storey apartments and upgrading the commercial area. [1]
