Turopolje

Turopolje is a region between Zagreb and Sisak in Croatia. The administrative center of the region Turopolje is the town of Velika Gorica. Turopolje is part of Posavina, a region south of Zagreb, bordered with the right banks of the Sava river on the northeast and the Vukomeričke gorice hills to the southwest. Turopolje extends across an aluvial plain 45 km in length and wide up to 23 km. The area of Turopolje occupies and area of about 600 km², with an avergae elevation of 110 m above the sea level. Turopolje is divided into two halves by the river Odra and its tributary Lomnica. The largest settlement is Velika Gorica first mentioned as Gorica in 1228. Other settlements include Mraclin (since prehistoric times), Staro Čiče (Bronze age), Šćitarjevo (Roman empire), Lukavec (defense castle dating to the 15th century), Velika Gorica, Lekenik, Vukojevac, Peščenica, Buševec, Ogulinec, Mraclin, Vukovina, Poljana Lekenička, Brežana Lekenička.
Vukojevac is in Turopolje and currently in the middle of an environmental battle in order to reroute the proposed highway between Zagreb and Sisak.
