Turner Stokes was heavily involved in the fight to preserve the Assateague Seashore as a nude recreation area. As head of the National Capitol Naturists, he began to get acquainted with many federal officials in an effort to head off anti-nudity regulations by various government agencies.

Later, as a highly successful ASA president, he convinced the AANR organization of the very real need to keep abreast of legislative activity Washington and throughout the U.S. through a strong Government Affairs team and professional lobbyists. He is active even today as the AANR gears up in an attempt to restore the Assateague area to a legally recognized nude area.
