Turnaround has several meanings:

  • In chemical manufacturing and petroleum refining, a turnaround is a scheduled large-scale maintenance activity wherein an entire process unit is taken offstream for an extended period for comprehensive revamp and renewal. This operation involves a lot of preparation, and many precautions are taken because this is a dangerous operation (especially at startup).
  • In civil engineering, a turnaround is a type of junction which enables traffic heading in one direction to efficiently turn around and head in the opposite direction; especially without having to utilize reverse gear. It is sometimes used as a synonym for cul-de-sac. The term can also refer to the maneuver of reversing a vehicle's direction (including maneuvers which require backing up, such as the three point turnaround).
  • In electronics, turnaround refers to the action of switching an I/O port between a high-impedance input state and an active output state.
  • In logistics, turnaround time is the time between the placement of an order and its delivery.
  • In jazz or blues, a turnaround is a passage at the end of a section which leads to the next section.
  • In film production, turnaround is the process where the rights to a project one studio has developed are sold to another studio in exchange for the cost of development.
  • Turnaround (Stan Rogers album), released in 1978.
  • Turnaround (Westlife album), released in 2003.
  • "Turnaround", a song by Devo, originally released as a B-Side of their single "Whip It".
  • Turnaround is a play by Roger Kumble, the third in his Pay or Play trilogy, about the dark side of the entertainment industry.
