The Turkish Council of State is the highest administrative court in the Republic of Turkey and is based in Ankara. Its role is protected by the Constitution of Turkey.

On May 3, 2006, Sumru Çörtoğlu was elected as the new chief judge of the Council of State after winning the 68th round of voting.[1]

On 17 May 2006, Alparslan Arslan, a gunman made his way into the Council of State building and subsequently shot dead one judge and injured four others. One of the wounded judges had been criticised for ruling against teachers wearing Muslim headscarves, and this religious nature of the attack is further supported by that fact that the attacker shouted Allahu Akbar before firing.[2]
