Turel

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Turel is a video game character in the Legacy of Kain series. He was voiced by Gregg Berger in Legacy of Kain : Defiance and Richard Doyle in Soul Reaver 2. The evolved vampire version of Turel was originally slated to appear in the game Soul Reaver, but he was cut due to time constraints. Turel did appear, however, in Legacy of Kain: Defiance , adding another strange twist to the story.

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

[edit] Sarafan life

Turel was born over 500 years before the start of the first game. He became one of the leaders of the Sarafan Order. He was among those who stormed Janos Audron's keep and aided in his murder. After helping to kill Janos, Turel was slain by a future version of his fellow Sarafan Raziel. After his death, Turel was interred in the Sarafan's holy tomb.

[edit] Vampire unlife

Centuries later, Turel was risen from the Sarafan crypt as Kain's second eldest son. He was given clan territory in a volcanic landscape. When Kain ordered Raziel's execution, Turel was one of the two who cast Raziel into the Abyss.

As the centuries progressed, Turel evolved/degenerated into a large, bestial creature with vast telekinetic abilities. These powers were passed onto his spawn. In his monstrous form, Turel was blind, but functioned on the use of his strong auditory and olfactory senses.

Some time between Raziel's execution and his resurrection as a wraith, Turel was drawn back through time by Azimuth the Planer, and some believe with the help of Moebius the Timestreamer, and imprisoned in a lair deep beneath Avernus Cathedral. Various Hylden routinely possessed Turel's body, giving orders to the cultists who worshipped him and demanding blood sacrifices to keep Turel alive.

Raziel, having traveled back in time, confronted Turel and defeated him, but not before the combined Hylden could further goad Raziel into hunting down Kain. Upon devouring Turel's soul, Raziel's own telekinetic abilities were greatly increased, rivaling those of Kain himself.

[edit] Trivia

Many newcomers to the series often mistake the Turelim vampire located inside the Tomb of the Sarafan in Soul Reaver for Turel himself. This is most likely due to the fact that slaying this vampire gives Raziel his force projectile ability.

This vampire has been named Morlock due to it being used as that character's name in the programming code. The dialogue between Morlock and Raziel is a slightly edited variant of the original dialogue that was supposed to take place between Turel and Raziel.
