Tuntun

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tuntun (real name Umadevi Khatri) (11 July 192324 November 2003) was an Indian singer and comedian. By the time of her death, she had appeared in 140 films.

She was born Uma Devi Khatri in Uttar Pradesh and raised by her uncle. She sang her first song in a movie in 1947, working alongside legends like Naushad Ali. Although she reached her peak with Chandralekha, the entry of the Mangeshkar sisters made it difficult for her to compete with her old-world style of singing.

Naushad introduced her to acting in her first film. She became Tuntun in Babul, and stayed that way till her death.
